Habitable Furniture: When Furniture Becomes Multifunctional Space.

Urban Biombo is a portable modular furniture prototype that can be inhabited. It configures a multifunctional space inside of an undefined space. It introduces the human scale into the large space, while aspires to eliminate the differences between architectural space and furniture. It is a prototype that reinterprets or reinvents San Jerome’s studio painted by Antonello de Messina completed around 1460–1475. It creates multiple playful possibilities of configurations (thanks to its dynamic quality) to work, play, exhibit, investigate, rest or create. It has the characteristics of a folding screen: adaptable, transformable, efficient, mountable and demountable nomadic structure that connects and separates. It includes shelves, storage areas and folding elements in multiple directions. It contains electrical connections and it can incorporate adaptable lighting and speakers. It is a new “equipment” for the house, the office, the loft or the warehouse, for a clothing boutique or a book shop.

It plays with the relationship between dwelling, appliance, furniture and a folding screen that proposes suggestive mixed ways of inhabiting. The portability and the possibility of different configurations are multiple as well as the speed of assembly (10 minutes by panel). It is easy to store and easy to move.  Its materials are recyclable, light and resistant: tubular aluminum structure of 1,5 cm, and panels of melamine 1.5 cm, with several options for color finishes.
